@srilankanairline started it’s flights to @ganinternationalairport today, The history making day for the geographically isolated islands of south Maldives would connect with more then 60 destinations, It’s time to travel south islands of Maldives, Maldives Promotion House – @maldives.net.mv – Civil Aviation and Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that Sri Lankan airlines will commence direct flights between Gan International Airport in Addu City and Colombo within the next two months. The plans were also discussed during the world wide conference of Sri Lankan airlines. While such discussions have been held on multiple occasions before, it is yet become a reality. The most recent international direct flights to Gan were carried out by Kingfisher airlines during October 2010. Condo from Germany and Blue Panorama from Italy also carried out direct flights to Gan, carrying tourists to the nearby resorts. Addu Atoll is currently home to two resorts and a city hotel. Addu City or Addu Atoll is the second city of Maldives consisting of the inhabited islands of the southernmost atoll of the archipelago. Addu City is the second-largest inhabitance in Maldives, in terms of population, and is the only inhabitance to get the status of “city” other than the capital city, Male’. Addu City has 5 districts. They are Hithadhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. These divisions are naturally islands, but are well connected. Addu Atoll itself has islands in addition to the above that are uninhabited. Addu also served as a British Royal Air Force, RAF Gan, from 1957 on the island of Gan during World War II. During the Cold War it was again used as an outpost. While the native language is Dhivehi, the dialect is very different from that of Capital City Malé. The 17th SAARC summit was hosted by Addu City and neighbouring Fuvahmulah in November 2011. The preparations for the summit brought numerous developments to the city, including the building of a convention centre, development of roads and public places, renovation of Gan International Airport and the regional hospital and more job opportunities among many others.
